Meet Leah Mathai
Head of HR, OpenGov Africa

When OpenGov Africa embarked on a full organizational rebuild in 2026, Leah Mathai stepped into one of the most demanding roles in the organization. As Head of HR, she took ownership of rebuilding the entire people function from the ground up, designing processes, managing documentation, overseeing recruitment, and making sure every person who joined felt seen, supported, and set up to succeed. From drafting offer letters to managing complex offboarding cases, Leah has been at the center of it all.

Leading with Quiet Strength

Leah leads without seeking the spotlight. She’s the person holding things together behind the scenes, communicating with clarity, handling sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy, and showing up for her team even when the workload is heaviest. She has the rare ability to lead people through change without letting them feel destabilized by it.

Key Achievements

  • Rebuilt OpenGov Africa’s entire HR function from scratch: recruitment pipelines, onboarding systems, offboarding protocols, and documentation frameworks
  • Oversaw offer letters, preboarding communications, and onboarding documentation across multiple departments at once
  • Co-developed the OpenGov Africa HR Standard Operating Guide, a reference document that will outlast this rebuild phase
  • Managed a volunteer roster transition, turning over 300 largely inactive members into a focused, accountable core team of 40+ active contributors
  • Led the rollout of the Certificate of Contribution, Recommendation Letter, and Testimonial recognition program
  • Anchored HR team meetings and delegated effectively across a growing team, maintaining standards even when resources were stretched

The Lasting Impact

OpenGov Africa would not be where it is today without Leah’s contribution to the people side of this rebuild. The systems she helped build aren’t temporary fixes; they’re the foundation every future HR lead, recruiter, and onboarding coordinator will work from. Every volunteer who joins OGA from here on will be welcomed and supported through processes Leah had a direct hand in creating.

Her impact goes beyond the tasks she completed. It’s in the culture she helped shape, one where people are treated with dignity, exits are handled with respect, and recognition is built into how the organization operates.

We’re proud to have Leah Mathai leading our HR team. OpenGov Africa is better because of her. 💜
